"The novelty from a superb vintage is the 2021 52-60, produced with Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha and also white grapes, Garnacha Blanca, Malvasía Riojana, Viura, etc., from small contiguous plots of 60-year-old vines in the lieu-dit or "paraje" of Mondiate in the village of Labastida on red sandstone soils farmed organically. The bunches were picked the first week of October, one of the finest harvests of recent years they remember, and the handpicked grapes were hand destemmed and fermented in small stainless steel vats and matured in a 1,100-liter oak foudre where it underwent malolactic fermentation and 13 months of aging. It's serious, a little shy and austere, with clout and energy. It feels a little backward and closed in comparison with the wines from the Grano a Grano range, which are a lot more open and aromatic. This is subtler and has controlled ripeness, a medium body and 13.5% alcohol, with a pH of 3.49 and 5.45 grams of acidity. It shows vibrant with explosive flavors and very fine tannins. It's a stunning debut, a serious red for the long haul." |
