De pinot noir van Rioja

Alegre-Valgañón, de “Pinot Noir van Rioja”.

Nieuwe jaargang binnen!

Oscar & Eva; ze klinken als namen uit het aards paradijs, maar in dit geval komen ze uit het uiterste Noord-westen van Rioja.

Ze hebben hun wijngaarden op de grens van waar wijnbouw mogelijk is in Noord-Spanje.

De wijngaarden die er nog zijn, zijn bijna steeds oude stokken met zeer lage rendementen.

Tijdens het jaar spelen ze meestal meer dan de helft van de opbrengst kwijt door hagelbuien of vrieskou. Dit zijn de Montes Obarenes, de westelijke uitlopers van de Sierra Cantabria.

Oscar kennen we wij La Buena Vida al heel lang. Hij was immers bijna 10 jaar lang de export manager voor Alvaro Palacios en bracht ons zo de fantastische wijnen van Descendientes de J.Palacios uit Bierzo.

Hij liet zijn topjob staan om samen met zijn Eva dit kleine familiedomein op te starten.

Helemaal from scratch, want hun vaders of grootvaders waren eenvoudige mensen die helemaal geen wijndomein over te geven hadden aan hun kinderen.

En dan juist in deze regio, waarvan iedereen in Rioja weet dat je bijna jaarlijks meer dan de helft van je opbrengst verliest. Un poco loco!

Zoals R.Parker het zo treffend zegt “These are wines from yesteryear”.

Oscar en Eva maken de wijnen zoals hun grootvader het zou gedaan hebben. Hun wijngaarden zijn regeneratief, er wordt geen gebruik gemaakt van aangekochte mest of pesticiden en andere chemische toestanden.
Ze maken en doen alles zelf om een natuurlijk evenwicht in hun prachtige wijngaarden te krijgen.

Ze werken ook volgens perceel wat tot gevolg heeft dat hun topwijnen steeds fieldblends zijn.

Dit geeft subtiliteit en fraîcheur aan de wijnen.

Hun wijnen, hoe beperkt ook, lopen dan ook in the picture. Ze worden omschreven als de “Pinot Noir van Rioja”.

Vaak dan ook een mengeling van rode en witte druiven, net zoals dat vroeger gedaan werd.

En dan hebben we het nog niet over hun witte wijnen gehad. Bent u een liefhebber van de witte Tondonia…? Say no more…

Al hun wijnen scoorden vorig jaar nog tussen de 93 à 95. Dit jaar zijn ze al een serieuze stek naar voren opgeschoven…
Want de wijnen die u vorig jaar voor de eerste keer kon kopen bij ons in oktober (jaargang 2021), scoorden intussen al een pak hoger met scores tussen 93+ en 97!

Dit wordt over hen gezegd in het Rioja-report bij R. Parker van eind februari dit jaar:
"I loved the wines from Alegre-Valgañón, a small family project that deserves more recognition"

Carra Sto Domingo 2021- 97/100
"I was able to taste a bottle of the terrific 2021 Carra Sto Domingo a bit later, which was bright, ruby colored, perfumed and expressive, perhaps a little higher-pitched than the Bahierra from the same vintage. The grapes from the vines planted in the 1920s fermented with some full clusters and uncrushed berries with a soft extraction and a maceration of three weeks. It's complex and aromatic, very elegant and super balanced, with great freshness, precision and harmony, symmetric and clean, like laser cut. It matured in a 225-liter barrel and another 500-liter one for 13 months. The tannins are very fine, and the wine comes through as very fresh. It is also powerful at 14.4% alcohol but keeps a low pH of 3.47. Production was a little bit higher that year, and they managed to produce 950 bottles of this beauty. It was bottled in January 2023."

"The pale, delicate and floral 2021 Bahierra has a really beautiful nose, elegant, nuanced, fresh and extremely clean, high pitched and fine. It had a medium-bodied, extremely elegant palate and very fine tannins, as well as vibrant, lively acidity and really precise, clean flavors that linger in your mouth for a long time. It's a beautiful bottle of elegant Rioja in the making. It should age magnificently in bottle. It kept evolving and developing in the glass, and I couldn't help to go back over and over again to smell it... The bad news is that there are only 600 bottles of this nectar. It was bottled in January 2023 after 15 months in 500-liter barrels."

Las Llanas 2021 - 94/100
"They are using some skin contact in all of their whites because of this wine, but here they have reduced it and have removed it from the label. I'm talking about the serious 2019 Las Llanas, a white from a plot they have worked for the last five years. In 2019, the wine only had a limited skin contact in the press, and the "orange" character is very limited, looking more for the sapid limestone expression from the soils. It has a showy nose with notes of quince and spice (clove), pollen and chamomile with something balsamic. It's mostly Viura and some Malvasía Riojana, Calagraño and Garnacha Blanca from a small very old plot on sandstone. It has 13.6% alcohol and a pH of 3.4 and is medium-bodied with very good freshness and a dry, chalky finish. It matured in a 500-liter barrel for one year and settled in a clayver until bottling. 650 bottles were filled in September 2021."

Calleja 2021- 94/100

"La Calleja was not bottled in 2020, so the 2021 La Calleja is going to be released a little earlier. It's a brilliant vintage for this wine, from a year they consider exceptional for Tempranillo. It has a classical, serious and austere profile with a cool-climate feeling to it and with very integrated oak; it always ferments in the same 6,000-liter oak foudre and matured in a combination of concrete and oak foudres for two years with two rackings. It should age beautifully in bottle. 4,300 bottles were filled in May 2023."
